Memorial Day Weekend

What a crazy, fun weekend we had! I am SO excited to be able to share things that don't have to do with Emma because I have been feeling a bit like she's all I talk about on here. But it's hard to have other things to share about when I'm with her 24/7....and I don't mean to make that sound negative. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the incredible blessing and privilege I have to stay home with her and don't take it lightly.

Anyway, without further ado....our weekend. (or at least the 2 highlights)

For Christmas, Jarred's parents gave us and his brother/sister-in-law gift certificates to go out to eat and demanded that they babysit all the kiddos while we double date. They were going to expire tomorrow so we quickly made reservations for Saturday night at this local place called the Bube's Brewery. This restaurant has 3 eating areas and we were planning to go to this part called the Catacombs. At the last minute we realized the cheapest thing on the  menu was $30 so we nixed that idea for one of the cheaper parts of the restaurant, The Bottling Works. Dinner was so-so...really slow service and I ordered a chicken ceasar salad that must have been from the kids menu because it was so tiny and bland and definitely not worth $12. When we asked for the bill, the hubby's get out their gift certificates, and the waiter informs us that he can only accept one of them. We said no no, we know we can only use one per check but we are 2 separate checks so it's okay. He explains that they "don't do separate checks anymore" and if he uses both of the certificates on one check, knowing that goes against their policy, it'll be taken out of his paycheck. So he offers to get the manager for us. Thanks. 20 minutes later, a woman strolls over, seriously dressed like a hippie in a flowy skirt with bright red lipstick, clutching her purse under her arm and although the verdict is still deciding if she actually was the manager or some street person like Jarred thinks, she proceeded to tell us a bunch of bologna about how they can't accept both of them and went into a confusing explanation about some other things before finally offering to get us the owner of the establishment. Great. Another 25 minutes go by, all the while, we're stewing over how ridiculous this is. If we had sat at different tables, there would be no issue. Finally the owner comes out. She plays it sugar sweet, asking how she could help us. We explained that we were trying to resolve an issue with our bill, that we were given these as gifts and now are being told that we can't use them because you can't separate our checks. She says, well yes it is our policy that we don't separate checks. We calmly explain that we were never informed of that policy, it's not written anywhere in the restaurant or on the menu and since MANY people do that everyday, we would suggest making that policy MUCH more well known. "oooooh" she says..."that's a wonderful suggestion. We should think about doing that." ha you're welcome, now what are you going to do about our problem here. She tells us that she could separate our checks, but she was still unwilling to use both of our certificates and starts to tell us how they aren't responsible for the certificates because they weren't actually purchased at their restaurant, they were purchased through a radio station and the person that bought them had to have agreed to the policy. We explained that they WERE responsible for accepting the certificates because, duh..what do you know...they are FOR THEIR RESTAURANT! She tried to argue that it's basically like "trying to use a Giant card at Weis?" and a bunch of other nonsense that didn't even make sense. She even went so far as to tell us that "they probably aren't going to do these certificates again." Again, great, but what are you going to do about OUR problem??? (and through all of this, we are VERY calm and respectful, not at all being rude or out of line). She told us that she wasn't going to argue with us, that she would only take one certificate and without coming to ANY sort of resolution, the owner of the restaurant, WALKED OUT ON US! Just left...abandoned paying customers! Can you believe it??? So there we are, sitting there baffled, with our mouths open like "Did that seriously just happen?" The poor waiter came back over and asked if we had reached a solution and after explaining our situation he said, "well all I can tell you to do is just pay it and never come back again." haha you know it's bad when an employee tells you never to return! So we paid our bill, used our ONE certificate and to redeem the situation, we gave our extra one to the young family behind us! :)

Unbelievable.....at least we have a ridiculous story to look back on and laugh.

So today, (this story is much shorter and involves pictures!) we had a little family picnic with Jarred's family here at our house. Out of nowhere a HUGE thunderstorm dropped 3.5in of rain/hail on us very fast. Our road was a complete river. Here's a picture of our mailbox catching a wave and the main road...

Looking out our front porch to the road. We have a very small creek that goes under that bridge which was totally overflowed and made a big lake out of our meadow.

But the night cleared up and we caught this AMAZING sunset. Seriously, our God is incredible. Mighty and awesome!!!

Mullets and Tractors

Has it already been a week since I posted last? Gosh, it feels like time is flying! The weather is finally getting a little nicer again so we've been spending lots of time outside. I don't have a picture of it, but we just put up a swing on our big tree in our front yard (you know the kind that has a wooden plank seat on rope? it fits in with the surroundings...) Anyway, we've been having so much fun. It's definitely not baby proof but my typically squirmy, not cuddly baby will sit on our laps completely still for a long time, as we swing swing swing. She loves it! She is also currently obsessed with driving things. Thank goodness we have a really long driveway. I'm burning so many calories doing 23094802384 laps up and down the driveway over and over again. This little car (in the picture below) is my new best friend. You can't see it in the picture, but on the back it has a really long pole that comes up to adult level so you can push it without leaning over. amazingly nice.....

The John Deere tractor is not so amazingly nice on the back, but she looks so darn cute driving it! And it makes Daddy super proud to see his girl loving the green tractors already! haha Speaking of John Deere....yesterday I volunteered to help my hubby mow the lawn. If you've never been to our house, you wouldn't know that we have LOTS of yard to mow. It takes Jarred about 4 hours to get it all done. And since he's very particular with how to yard looks, he does it pretty much every other day. Add that to an already looong day of farming and we pretty much don't see a lot of him in the spring and summer months. So I volunteered to give it a whirl yesterday while Emma took her afternoon nap. He pulled out the Deere, gave me a demo lesson on how to work it and strictly forbad me from going near the front yard. I was delagated to the back where no one could see my figure 8s :) haha I worked SO hard, trying to make very straight lines and in the end he was impressed although he did comment that I didn't make "striped lines" alternating the direction on each pass. Goodness....what did he expect? i'm a novice mower and the man makes lines practically for a living driving tractors! ha!

And just for good measure, I just wanted to show you all a picture of my little lady's hair. She DOES actually have some although it's hard to see in pictures. The back is coming in nicely, forming a beautiful curly mullet. It suits her tractor loving self perfectly. Maybe when she's 2, the top of her head will have some substantial hair on it! haha

11 Months (late)

Emma, you are 11 months old!
What are you up to these days?
-Walking, walking, walking! It's all you want to do. You are getting sturdier by the day and if you are holding something/are distracted, you can go across a room. Otherwise, you get too excited and start to run....which leads to a face plant.
Here you are trying to walk off of the sofa....Im glad I only have to do this one more month. These pictures are no longer easy!

-You weigh 17lbs, wear size 6-9m clothes and size 3 diapers. You are verrrry petite. :)
-In true girl fashion, you are OBSESSED with shoes. You spend the majority of your day finding shoes to put on your hands and crawl around with. Mommy's, Daddy's or yours...
-You can say "go" (this is your favorite right now and you yell it very loud! hehe) "cow" "moo" "quack quack" and "daisy".
-You're still get constipated a lot and have been getting congested. We are going back to the allergist in June to see how your dairy allergy is and if you have any other food allergies.
-You are weaned and taking bottles like a champ.

That's all I can think of for now and you just woke up from your afternoon nap so I should log off. Here's one of the 2 good pictures of you with Bear Bear.
You know you live on a farm when.......there's a fly on your baby's forehead in a picture. YUCK! haha! The other good picture did'nt have the fly, but I thought ya'll would enjoy this funny one! haha

Priceless

How much is this little button worth??
I'd say:

-She's priceless!
-Couldn't put a number on it even if I tried!
-Statistics say you'll spend an average of 20385092385 dollars over a child's lifetime (i made that up but it is a big number)
-Those leg rolls alone are worth millions to me!

but I'd be wrong according to this:

We went yard sale-ing this morning and this afternoon, after I organized clothes, I discovered this adorable little hiney walking around priced at 50 cents. What a deal!!!! :)

Walk and Talk

Watch out world...here I come!!!

I was all set to post a video of Emma starting to walk but alas, blogspot hates me and I can never post videos ever. It's really a shame because she looks so darn cute and she's been trying nonstop for the past 2 days. She's taking 3-4 steps and I'm sooo ready for her to just take off because she's at the really whiny frustrated stage. I remember it happened before she figured out crawling too - like she knows what she wants to do but can't quite get it yet. Anyway, I'm so proud of her and she is just the cutest stinkin thing I've ever met.

p.s. I named this post after the club I was in during my sophomore year of high school "the walk and talk club." Can you guess what we did?? haha very academic of me...

Growing Up

The weekend before Emma's first birthday, I'm going away for a weekend retreat with my girls group. It'll be my first time away (for the night) from Emma and so of course, I've been planning out things I need to prepare ahead of time. One of the things I've been processing is when to stop breastfeeding her. (For any guys reading, you may just want to stop here...the rest is about nursing and gets pretty sentimental so you probably won't enjoy it! ha!)  For a while, I tried to pump bottles to leave for her, but then I realized that if I keep nursing her up until the trip, then I'd have to pack my pump and do that while I'm there. yuck yuck no thanks. So, about a week ago, I started to wean Emma. Since I've never done this before, I wasn't exactly sure what to expect out of the process. I wanted to give both of us plenty of time before my retreat to get adjusted so I decided to give it a month. So this past week, I cut back to only nursing her twice a day: in the morning and at bedtime and replacing her naptime feedings with milk. (don't tell the pediatrician, but she's almost a year and formula prices are outrageous and we're strapped for cash and I promise I'm not a horrible mommy)  Surprisingly we both have done REALLY well! She's drinking the bottles without a fuss, actually drinking more than I expected and I'm feeling great! So now that we've done that for a week, I decided to drop down to one feeding a day. I could tell my body was really adjusting quickly and wasn't having trouble with it so I decided to do something that I don't think I'll ever regret.

I can't tell you how fast this (almost) year has gone by. I can hardly remember the tiny 5lb baby we brought home from the hospital!! I have really enjoyed being able to nurse Emma...it's indescribable knowing that you and you alone are sustaining and nurturing a life. It's such a miracle! I wanted to do something special to remember this season of our life. So tonight, while Daddy was out working and we had the house to ourselves, I took full advantage of the quiet. After our usual bath/bedtime routine, I put on some soft lullabies, dimmed the lights, and settled into the rocking chair I used when she was a newborn. I sang over her, prayed over her and adored my little girl while she nursed. She fell asleep in my arms, which she hasn't done in a long long time and I couldn't stop thanking Jesus for this precious time together. It was bittersweet; I'm so excited to see her grow and develop into an adorable little toddler, but I will miss those newborn days so much! I felt like crying out, 'she's growing up too fast God!' The LORD sweetly reminded me that I will be able to continue to "nurse" her for the rest of her life....I will nurse her boo boos, nurse her first broken heart, nurse her back to health when she's sick, and feed her Truth for all the days of her life. Tonight probably wasn't the very last time I'll nurse my sweet girl, but I am so glad to have this incredible memory to look back on and remember. I would HIGHLY recommend doing this to any nursing Momma out there. You WON'T regret it!

First Boat Ride!

Last night, after several days of Jarred itching to get out on the river, we took Emma out for her very first boat ride!

I'm not sure she could look ANY cuter! She was not a fan of the life jacket, but other than that, she L.O.V.E.D the experience!

Helping Daddy drive back into the dock. After she found this seat, she didn't want to be anywhere else. (I realize she does not have her life jacket on in this picture. We were going about .00001 mph and were almost back to the dock. She had had enough of the jacket and I had had enough of fighting her.)

On the Susquehanna River, there is a spot called "Boat City" that's very shallow where lots of boats throw down their anchor and relax/play. It reminds me of the song "Redneck Yacht Club" if you are familiar with country music. Anyway, we went over there and Emma had a BLAST splashing in the water with Daddy and Grandpa on the sand bar. Seriously the girl would have crawled right in the water if he would have let her! I think we may have a little fish on our hands!

Jarred's been waiting and waiting and waiting for Em to be big enough to enjoy the river (he calls it being a "river rat" but I just can't bring myself to use the word "rat" in a description of my baby girl). My heart was soooo full of joy to see the two of them playing in the water together because I know that he was loving every second. I can't wait for the water to be warm enough for her to really play and splash around. Summer's going to be so.much.fun!!! As I relaxed on the boat while they played, I thought about all of the trips to the park we can go on, introducing Emma to ice cream cones and freeze pops, setting up a sprinkler and/or a baby pool once she can really walk (she's almost there!), and taking lots of family walks...Thank you LORD for blessing me SO abundantly!! :)

You know you live on a farm when...

...your babies first words are "Daisy" (the dog's name) and "cow."
